History of Jaipur
Jaipur the Pink City, got its name from its founder Maharaja Jai Singh II, and has been the capital of the erstwhile Jaipur state since the year of its inception, 1727. The Maharaja, besides being a great ruler, was also a very renowned astrologer and mathematician. He delegated Vidhyadhar Bhattacharya to design Jaipur as per Shilp Shastra, the Hindu treatise and the great precision of design resulted in probably the first planned city of India.
You can view the same planning when visiting Jaipur as you will see that the roads are divided into big rectangular blocks that are surrounded by a peripheral wall with huge gates. You will also notice that the market places are essentially named after the primary commodity that is manufactured or sold in it.
In 1876 Prince Albert, the consort of Queen Victoria, visited Jaipur and the city dressed in pink for welcoming him, earning the epitaph ‘PINK CITY’.
Tourists, visiting Jaipur, are also keenly interested in exploring and shopping for handicrafts especially the exquisite gold jewelry that is inlaid or enameled with precious stones, wood carvings, blue pottery, ivory & stone, tie & dye textiles, miniature paintings, handmade paper, block print, etc.
